The well-known resorts of Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper are popular holiday destinations in the Rockies, both in the winter when conditions are ideal for skiing and snowboarding, as well as during the warm summer months when temperatures are perfect for a lakes and mountains holiday with plenty of outdoor activities. Weather in Canadian Rockies - Changeable at altitude, always be preparedSummers see warm weather with plenty of sunshine in the Rockies, with the season beginning in May, when average daytime temperatures reach 11C, and there are 6 hours of sunshine. There are generally spring-like conditions at this time, and some changeable days, with evenings still cold and night-time temperatures hovering around 0C - 2C. June rises to 15C, with more sunshine - around 7 hours each day - and by July and August, the Canadian Rockies are seeing average highs of 18C - 20C, and night-time temperatures of up to 4C. These warm days are ideal for exploring all that the parks have to offer, whether it be hiking and biking, horse riding or a wildlife tour spotting grizzly bears, wolves and moose. Thanks to the altitude - the Rockies has some peaks reaching up to 1,700m - the sun is extremely strong and has a high UV rating throughout the area, especially high up in the mountains, meaning sunscreen and glasses are essential whilst outside. Visitors should always be prepared for changing weather, even in the summer, with lightweight layers, waterproofs and plenty of water with them when out for day trips in the parks.
